Scholarships & Bursaries

Every scholarship and bursary establishes a route through higher education for someone who might otherwise have missed out.

Scholarships at University of Galway are awarded to students in various circumstances. From those who excel in specific areas of academia, to those representing cultural diversification in certain sectors or lower socio economic backgrounds. Thanks to the support of our valued partners who share our vision for the future, we are continuing to invest in access to education for all across a range of initiatives, including: 

Pauline & Bunnie Jones Scholarship

The Pauline & Bunnie Jones Scholarship was established to promote excellence and celebrate academic achievement in secondary schools in Co. Roscommon. The Jones Family is the benefactor of this scholarship which is awarded through Galway University Foundation.

Supported by the Jones family of Tulsk, Co Roscommon, in honour of their parents Pauline and Bunnie Jones, the scholarship was established to encourage academic achievement and support students from the county who are enrolling in an undergraduate degree at University of Galway.

The Hygeia Scholarship

Hygeia is a leading Irish manufacturer of performance garden care, agricultural and animal care products established in Galway City in 1939 by Dr. Donny Coyle.

Through it's partnership with University of Galway, Hygeia Scholarships are awarded to students who are experiencing financial barriers to accessing third-level education. Internship and placement opportunities on graduation ar also offered to recipients as part of their ongoing partnership with the progressive Galway based company.

Medtronic Technical Fellow Scholarship

As global leaders in medical technology, services, and solutions, Medtronic believes diversity and inclusion are instruments that power the innovative thinking which truly transforms healthcare.

The Medtronic Technical Fellow Scholarship aims to facilitate equal opportunity in engineering by offering financial support to under-represented socio-economic groups that have low participation rates in higher education in the areas of Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering.

The scholarship is targeted at incoming first year students and provides an annual bursary for the duration of their studies. 

Emergency Hardship Fund

Galway University Foundation contributes towards the Financial Aid Funds which are intended to tackle disadvantage by providing financial support to enable students fully benefit from their third level studies.

Financial problems can arise for several reasons and the Emergency Hardship Fund (one of the FAF) is awarded to students who have had a significant life changing experience within the last 12 months and during the course of their studies that has left them in financial crisis . Chronic mental / physical illness, bereavement, and sudden unemployment of a parent / guardian or partner are some of the situations where our students who are in need may be eligible for this crucial busary.
